how to boil chinese herbs

Are you not concerned about losing volatile components of the herbs due to evaporation? I always keep the lid on especially for the first boil then keep the tea from the 1st boil separate. I then reboil 2 more times then recombine all the teas at the end. If wanting to sterilize the containers I boil them after I have added the cooled tea, containers sealed obviously. I do this to preserve the volatile elements.
